    Welcome to our latest Global Water Annual Review for 2021-22: reflecting on how we are continuing to work with clients across the full water cycle. We are helping to build resilience, adapting to the causes and mitigating the ever-increasing impacts of climate change – particularly the effects of flooding, which have been so evident across the year.

    In a year that saw COP26 hosted in Glasgow – and the delivery of the first ever Water Pavilion at the conference, which placed water at the heart of the climate change conversation – it is essential that this engagement continues as we look ahead to COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh.

    Design With Water 2.0: collaborative tools for place based outcomes

    It’s almost ten years since we developed the first edition of Design with Water: a vision for outcomes-led design that has shaped our work and influenced strategy and projects around the world, from Hull to New York and Shanghai. Based on ongoing learning and feedback, we have refreshed and extended the whole-systems framework and we are adding a new toolkit for creative, collaborative design.

    Improving resilience in the Americas

    2021-22 has brought an increased emphasis on the sustainability and resilience of water systems, communities and utilities throughout the Americas region, impacting all business sectors.  This has provided opportunities to support our clients, not only in capital project delivery employing both traditional and alternative delivery methods, but also in strategic planning, incorporating a broader range of elements such as diversity and inclusion, social benefit and a focus on innovation.

    Sydney Water Planning Partnership

    Our water business in Australasia has gone from strength to strength, growing our teams as we settle into a steady rhythm on the Sydney Water Planning Partnership. This growth has been on the back of winning some great strategic work with government clients including the New South Wales (NSW) Water Strategy, Regional Town Water Supply and Wastewater Emissions Projections, feeding into key policy for NSW on the way emissions are managed, and reduction targets determined for local governments.

    Enhancing climate resilience in East Asia

    Continuing to improve water resilience across the region, we are leading projects across the water cycle from Wawa Bulk Water supply in Manila, designing the expansion of the Ngau Tam Mei Water Treatment Works, enhancing the climate resilience of over 300 critical drainage and sewerage infrastructures in Hong Kong, Antipolo Sewerage Scheme in Manila, and watershed assessment in the Philippines.  Expanding our footprint in Southeast Asia, we have delivered technical advisory works in Cambodia and established a full multi-disciplinary water team in Taiwan.

    Advising across the water cycle

    We have continued to work with water and non-water clients across the region, providing advice across the water cycle.  In Ireland we have delivered nationally significant flood resilience projects as well as developing an innovative pilot study for climate change adaptation planning of flood schemes.  In Poland we have supported a number of cities with the development of digital solutions to manage stormwater, and across locations in Ireland, Poland, Spain and Turkey we have been assessing water risk for data centre clients.

    A year of diversification, new opportunities, recruitment and growth. This year we’ve delivered an amazing range of projects including capital delivery schemes helping improve river health, assurance for challenging major projects, strategic advice on asset health, digital epidemiological studies tracking COVID-19 , and Modern Methods of Construction research to deliver net zero ambitions.
